Connahs
Quay Nomads History & Honours |
Connahs
Quay Juniors was formed
in 1946 by Tommy G Jones, Everton and Wales centrehalf, who was well
known as the manager of Bangor City during their
epic tussle with Napoli in 1962. Tommy had a vision of a young
Connahs Quay side, and following a meeting in the Chapel
Street Scout Hut a club was formed. Permission was granted
by Northgate Brewery for the club to play on their infamous sloping
pitch behind the Halfway House public house where football had been
played for eighty years. The club quickly established a reputation at youth football level by winning the Welsh Youth Cup in 1948. In those early years Connahs Quay Juniors fielded teams in the Northop Youth League whilst a senior side played in the Flintshire League. In 1951 Connahs Quay reached the final of the Welsh Amateur Cup but lost 3-1 in the final to Treharris at Aberystwyth. In 1952 the club name was changed to include Nomads and the club joined the Welsh League North. The Welsh Amateur Cup was won in 1953 and The Nomads enjoyed success in the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1952, 1953 and 1955. The 1952-53 season also saw Nomads embark upon a Welsh Cup which culminated in a semi final clash with Chester City at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham. Chester won 5-0 but the Welsh League side played before 5000 supporters and achieved a declared profit of £1200 for the season. Unknown to many perhaps, but The Nomads also made their mark on English Non League football. In 1971-72 they entered the FA Trophy and won through four rounds only to lose to Grantham, champions of the Midland Counties League. In 1974-75 The Nomads joined the Clwyd League, seven years later 1981 was to prove the most successful in the clubs history, winning seven trophies including the Clwyd League, the League Cup and Presidents Cup. The club were founder members of the Cymru Alliance in 1990 and then LoW in 1992 where they have been ever present members since. In 1994 under the guidance of new manager Neville Powell, The Nomads won the NWCFA Cup for the first time. In 1996 the League Cup was won, arguably the most prestigous trophy in the club's fifty years, two years later in 1998 another milestone was a first ever Welsh Cup Final, runners up to Bangor City. In 2002-03 The Nomads finished in 5th place, their highest placing to date. For the 2006-07 season the club were based at Flint and play their WP fixtures at Cae Y Castell, home of Flint Town United, whilst resurfacing work was carried out at the Deeside stadium. In the summer of 2008, the news broke that Connahs Quay were to be sponsored by employment agency GAP and would amend their name to reflect that change. As the number of clubs in the league were cut at the end of the 2009-10 season Connahs Quay were relegated. They won the CA in 2010-11 but failed the license criteria but repeated the feat in 2011-12 and were duly promoted to the WP. A great effort from Mark McGregor and his staff. |
