Llandudno Town History & Honours |
Football in Llandudno
dates back to 1878 when a club,
probably known as Gloddaeth Rovers was in existence for around a
decade. This club was
formed largely for the purpose of providing activity for cricketers
during their close season.
A full International Wales v Ireland was played at the Council Field, Llandudno in 1898. Llandudno were founder members of the Welsh National League (north) in 1921 and were champions in 1923 and League Cup winners in 1930. They also won the NWCFA Cup in 1926 and NW Amateur Cup in 1929. Controvesy struck the club in 1931 when the FAW instructed them to play in East Wales, which Llandudno refused and were suspended. However they were founder members of the Welsh League (North) in 1935 and remained there until 1939, and again after the war from 1946 to 1974. They were League Champions in 1936 and 1937 adn won the NW Amateur Cup again in 1948 and 1962, aso the Alves Cup in 1951 and the Cookson Cup in 1965. Llandudno moved to their present Maesdu Park ground in 1991 after their previous stadium was used for the construction of the Asda superstore in the late 1970s. Under the chairmanship of Bob Paton the ground was officially opened in 1991 and floodlights erected in 1994. A clubhouse and outside seating were added during 1995, by 2002 the seating capacity had risen to 130. One the field Llandudno have proved themselves arguably the most consistent member of the Cymru Alliance since joining in 1993-94. The finished fourth in their first three seasons, and after the disappointment of slipping to tenth in 2001-02 they were runners up in 2002-03 with an end of season run that kept promotion hopes alive. In 1996 Llandudno reached the League Cup final but lost to Oswestry Town. The club is ambitious, Llandudno one of the larger towns in North Wales, and a place in the national LoW very much an attainable target. A new committee took over in May 2000 with an emphasis on youth, reflected in the range of Under 16 age groups sides within the club. In 2002-03 Llandudno finished as runners up to eventual champions Porthmadog following an impressive finish to the season, and would seem set to continue to challenge for honours during the current campaign. At the start of the 2004-05 campaign Llandudno had a new manager in former Halkyn boss Gareth Thomas but within weeks of the kick of he had departed along with many of his new squad. Llandudno then set their sights on promotion to the Welsh Premier. This involved the appointment of Grant Montgomery as manager and a series of ground improvements. The WP criteria were largely met by the end of the 2005-06 season with the club moving on with the necessary work in the following months. Managerial changes saw Allan Bickerstaffe come and go to be replaced by Deiniol Graham. |
